They are larger than honey bees, hairy, often colourful and their wings make a loud buzzing sound while flying. </p>

The tibiae of the rear legs usually have a conspicuous spine at their distal end. The pompilid body is typically dark (black or blue, sometimes with metallic reflections), but many brightly colored species exist. Most species have long wings. Spider wasps use a single spider as a host for feeding their larvae. They paralyze the spider with a venomous stinger. Once paralyzed, the spider is dragged to its nest. A single egg is laid on the abdomen of the spider, where after the nest or burrow is closed. The size of the host can influence whether the wasp's egg will develop as a male or a female. </p>

<h5>Velvet ant - Family Mutillidae</h5><p>The Mutillidae are a family of more than 3,000 species of wasps whose wingless females resemble large, hairy ants. Their common name velvet ant refers to their dense pile of hair, which most often is bright scarlet or orange, but may also be black, white, silver, or gold. Small to medium body and is usually black and often has a brown thorax with white or silver spots or bands on the abdomen. Females are wingless. Only the males can fly. After mating the female enters a host insect nest, typically a ground-nesting bee or wasp burrow, and deposits one egg near each larva or pupa. </p>

The worker ants hunt solitary only around dusk. They are able to capture a wide range of prey, including termites, agile and nocturnal insects. They sting their prey and the venom has an instant, violent effect as even large prey. </p>
